Having strangers touch you

So you’re doing yoga, and this cute guy you don’t know is assisting you in the purvottanasana. He’s standing over you, with one leg on each side of you, holding your waist, lifting your hips upwards. Five long breaths. He says “good”, let’s you go and smiles at you. What can you do, other than smile back? After all, you don’t want to be impolite.

  1. Every male instructor needs to be aware of how unintentional actions can be taken as threatening or invasive. This was the kind of feedback we often got living together in the ashram.
